Natural Burials. Marsden Valley Cemetery is the main cemetery in Nelson city. It caters for Natural burials.
The logic behind the use of Natural Burial Areas is that of low environmental impact.
Bodies buried in this area shall not to be embalmed or contain any other chemicals that would slow or prevent the natural breakdown of the body in the soil.
Burials shall be single depth as close to or within the active soil layer.
Caskets, coffins or body coverings shall be bio degradable and shall not contain any chemical or substance to prevent the breakdown of the products used.
Family are able choose and plant a tree during the planting season as a memorial.
